Deer Lake Newfoundland

It was a dive up to Deer Lake on Thursday and we arrived around 3pm and found the campground and dropped the trailer and heard out to the big small town of Deer Lake. We drove around and found the information center got the skinny on the area and Gros Moran national park, the grocery store and a few restaurants. I set my sites on Chinese food for dinner.

We went to the grocery store and picked up a few items for the week headed back to camp to drop off out booty and heard up to the park about 17Km up the road. You know when you’re near a national park, things just look majestic. Gros Moran is no different except you could buy Moose burgers alongside the road. We headed over to Lemond on the south side of the park to see what the campground looked like. There are only2 campgrounds open this time of year, lemond and green point. What a ride we stopped and took pictures of the park entrance and were just amazed at the topography and geology of the area. This is a place where you can see the tectonic plates in action; I think it’s better than the continental divide in the USA, or when I see it in Panama along the Panama Canal. More to be revealed on that one! It started getting dark and we never did make it to see the campground.

It started to rain Thursday night and get a bit chilly, but Chinese food was on my mind and I knew where to find some! The name of the place was called Canton for Cantonese’s Chinese food. Well you know every place is different and this one was looking normal till we ordered. There are something’s you just don’t see on a Chinese menu like pasta, spaghetti, pizza and cheese cake.  Tom ordered hot tea and the sweet and sour chicken with fired rice and an egg roll the # 1 combination plate.

I order a bowl of wanton soup and the Szechwan pork and vegetables.  I thought it was a se bet spicy pork and veggies. Well toms tea came and it was just the cup and hot water and a small round tea bag.. hmmm where’s the tea pot? Then came toms meal.. Whoa 4 round balls of fried? With a big pile of lightly fried rice and a tamale, or a McDonalds apple pie we were not sure what it was, but egg roll it was not. We giggled and tom dove in. now I know I can feed 5 people on one chicken breast, these folks got it beat, they can feed 20 on 1 chicken breast. Toms a game soul and he did the dinner justice till it came to the egg roll.

In the mean time my dinner cam and was just a plate of vegetables ( peas, lima beans, carrots, onions, celery, ginger and a few un-known items a few nuts a bit of pork (I think it was pork) in a mild spicy brown sauce.. un no rice, that was extra they don’t serve rice unless you ask for it or it come in a combination plate. It was an interesting dinner and I thought you folks and my friend Stanley might want to know what Chinese food was like in Newfoundland. Now you know.. Tread if you dare! Where ever you go Chinese food is interesting fare.

We I went to see some friends of Bill W and Tom got fuel and some extra reading material for tomorrows adventure to Corner Brook and we called it a night as it lightly rained on the trailer, we could hear a nice pitter patter most of the night..

The food shopping experience is another wonderful reason why we like new challenges. We could not find butter in quarters, only the one pound packages or in a big tub. We could not find bisquick anywhere so we opted for some unknown pancake mix. It will be very tasty.

One thing that we forgot to mention while we were in Codroy, we did laundry in the campground. There were loonies and tunies for both machines. Some of our stuff including the wool socks required air drying on a clothes line. Remember those? There were no trees to hang the line to so we hooked to the grill post and the picnic table. As mother use to say “it was a good drying day”.
