Our first Day in Newfoundland

Hi All,

After our late arrival in the campground last night we were delighted to see the sun come up and view the beauty of our surroundings. The campground is very large, but there is only six or seven camp sites used. The surrounding area is full of hills, mountains and lots of evergreen trees. We spent the morning catching up on sleep and miscellaneous chores. We had a great breakfast as usual including bacon, eggs and fried mashed potatoes. We took stock of what we needed and what we wanted to do and headed out for our first adventure in Newfoundland.

The Road to Codroy was windy and beautiful. We had a map that the campground host had given us of the area with some points of interest. We went to the fishing pier first, there were many boats in the harbor being worked on, some fixing their nets others fixing their boats. We walked around and said hi to a few guys, took some pictures and headed up the road to the Anguilla lighthouse.

You could see the light house in the distant, with the Atlantic Ocean rolling in; we turned down the dirt road and were in total awe as we drove closer to the lighthouse. It’s on a bluff a good 20 feet or so above the water with 3 other buildings on the grounds. There is a welcoming sign letting us know that it was a working lighthouse and a bed and breakfast and that we were welcome to explore. And explore we did! You could see for miles up and down the coast, you could see the mountains in the background and you could see some very large cliffs looking east. There really is nothing around but large open windswept fields and areas of fur trees, some crazy fence lines here and there. We took pictures and filmed for a good hour as we walked up and down the coast, Tom went into the light house keepers residents and talked to the B&B manager and learned all about the place. The manager took me on a tour of the place. At one time it was a double house with the lighthouse keeper and family on one side and the engineer on the other side. According to the townspeople they did not get alone, so there was a second house built on the property for the engineer and his family. The place is only half renovated because of money problems. The unfinished part showed exactly how the place looked during the lighthouse keeper’s time.

We left there and headed to the Provincial Park, but we found a nice dirt road that pointed toward the sea, and took it. We followed it down and it got smaller and quite wiled, we actually see a car parked out in the middle of nowhere. We stopped and just took it all in, smelling the smells, and listening to the wind, feeling the sun. It was a good place. We took some pictures and video of the area and of the coast and headed back to the main road.  Once on the main road we stopped at a variety store and variety it was! It was part grocery store, music shop, hardware store, furniture and pet supplies. You could also get a grave stone engraved or cleaned. Tom got an Ice-cream sandwich and I got lemonade and some Newfoundland cheese doodles.

We headed home and time for a nap.. Something you always do on a vacation…..

After dinner of deer meat burgers and home grown salad stuffing’s we drove down to the ocean to see the sunset. We walked the beach and had some great shots of the sun setting across the Atlantic Ocean. It is now 8:30 our time and is it dark, really dark, only a sliver of moon. No reflections of big cities and big freeways. We are in the wilderness.
