Whirligigs and campground Jam
It was a productive Saturday to say the least, breakfast at the Lockport Dinner and a bit of camp cleanup before we headed back to Shellburne for a day of filming, fun and festivities. On our way out of Lockport we stopped by to see a local guitar and musical instrument builder, we followed the directions Jamie had given us and we found old Wood road, well we thought it would be one of the houses on the road before the road turned into a 2 track path.. Nope follow the road down to the last house. Hmmm, we did and to no avail no one was home, but what a place back in the woods of Nova Scotia. Well be back to see this man’s artwork of musical instruments.
On to Shellburn to meet the crew of 3@sea then it was off to the Dory museum. Great historical place, we shot some fine footage and were able to record the guided tour from a lovely young lady who really knew her history and her dory’s (short film to come)Then we headed for the Whirligig festival down the street next to the historical Nova Scotia ship building museum. Now who would have thought that whirligigs could be so interesting and fun, not me. But it was a blast!
There were whirligigs of every shape and size doing everything imaginable, what an art. At the festival there were pipers dressed in period cloths, there was a re-enactment of the Loyalist arriving in shellburne in a large row boat. (Short film to follow) from there we went to a fine desert restaurant for desert and tea. Well actually tea and coffee. Oh ya! what a place, we all ordered something different and passed it around, my favorite was the caramel apple pie, but all were outstanding. If I could just remember the names of them all.. I could order them again somewhere.
Back at the marina and on the boat, we setup to re-interview Ayal Besemer for their 3@sea promotional video; it’s been 1 year since the family has been out cruising the Atlantic and great lakes. It was a bit of a challenge to get the right lighting as it was the other day in Lunenburg, but I think we got it right and the sound was good with no wind noise. Let’s hope for a great promo. Well after some laughs and a game on the WII Tom and I said our good bye’s and wished them well on their trip south and told them we would see them in Mexico or Costa Rica and we headed back to camp.
Back at camp we cooked up some fresh cod and some clams, put on the last pot of beans from the garden. Man o man, the fish was great, little garlic, S&P and a bit of lemon rind and some thyme sauté in some butter…Oh ya! It was talking to us. Of course the clams were superb too when they are as fresh as they were, I must say these Canadians clean them well, very little if any sand or grit.
After dinner we cleaned up and headed for the Park office for the Jam Session with our campground host Jamie, and a few of his friends. There was his mom and dad, wife Dianne and son Nate, and a few other campers. It was great, 2 guitars and a mandolin, I filled in on some percussion (I always bring a bag of noise makers with us on the road) He started out with swinging doors a jukebox and a bar stool and it just took off from there. It was a good 2 hours of music and stories from the musicians and the other folks in the room, a real special night if you ask me. After that it was time to call it a night. It was cold about 35 degrees.
Facts: the Dory was basically only made in 2 places, Shellburne and Lunenburg Nova Scotia. Sidney Mahaney began working in the Dory Shop at age 17 and continued to build dories here, on and off, until he died at age 95. He built over 10,000 dory’s
Hank Snow the country music star is from the south shore of Nova Scotia near Lunenburg.
